I teach 5th grade, and I run into such problems with CELLPHONES!! I teach 10 and 11 year olds and these kids are over run with cellphones!! I have had problems with kids at school and cellphone ranging from such things as pornography to death threats!! All on my student's cellphones! Let me reiterate one more time, I TEACH 5th GRADERS!!! Does this not seem a little much to be giving a 10 year old a cellphone and unlimited texting and just think they are going to know how to handle everything that comes their way. This is the new aspect of parenting that parents are forgetting! You have to explicitly teach your kids cellphone "rights and wrongs" Am I the only one who thinks it is plain CRAZY to give a 5th grader their own cellphone!?! Vent with me if you will.....

I have some cool text messaging little books I got from scholastic that you could use. As I teach, we talk about how to block calls from people you don't want, etc....it opens discussions. You want to borrow them? They aren't going away..we just have to teach how to be safe. Sorry reality hit.
The whole point of writing this is for me to vent that PARENTS to get on the ball, we already are more of parents than we should be to these students. Of course we teach them cell phone stuff, but this is something that can't be reinforced or even practiced without the parents doing it. The responsibility lies with the parents, not the teacher even though we always pick up the slack.
wow. crazy. this world.... yeah, i just don't quite have words for what i want to say. they are so young! It's sad to think that I'm going to have to teach my kids about this kind of stuff so young because even if they dont' have a cell phone, one of their friends is sure to and they'll have to know what to do or think.
I had to take a cell phone away from a 6 year-old in my Primary class. "No texting in sharing time."
So yes, I am in Young Women's at church and I have to threaten the girls each week that if I see their cell phones I will take them. Good luck dealing with your class!
Hey, so you know there are parents with controls, much to the dismay of my teenage son. He is not allowed to talk or text after 10pm. If we see on the records any texting during school time, phone gone! No cell phone on Sunday, at all! or on Monday nights. And, he has limits to the texts he can send. He always complains that everyone else has unlimited, why can't he? Because this life is about self-control and it has to be about everything. The most important thing we did was write all these things down into a cell phone contract which was signed by us all. It's good to know that if the kids need to go to you, they are not going to run "amuck" :)
